Department of Dermatology

The study of skin and its pathology requires skill and proper guidance. Unlike other medical specialities Dermatology needs visual diagnosis. Under the able guidance of Prof Jayakar Thomas, Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology, the faculty, post graduate and under graduate students in the department are trained in research work, scholarly paper presentation in the state and national conferences and publication of this work in national and international journals.

The Department lies in the ground floor of the Hospital of Sree Balaji Medical College with spacious and well-lit OPD and procedure rooms.

The department has spacious and well-lit OPD rooms and separate procedure room. The procedure room is fully equipped with instruments needed for dermatological and Cosmetology procedures.

There is a department library for the staff and postgraduate students. A separate clinical laboratory (side lab) for postgraduate training is also available. Post-graduation in the department of dermatology was started in the year 2009. The postgraduate students are intensively trained clinically and also in theory by conducting regular assessment examinations. They are trained to perform bed side procedures like smears for fungus, staining techniques, to perform slit skin smear and to do skin biopsy. They are also trained in doing cosmetology procedures like chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, derma rollers, wart removal using electro cautery, cryotherapy etc. The Master degree requirements include paper presentation in conferences, publications in journals and research projects and submission of the thesis to the University. The intention of post graduate programme is to educate students to become complete clinicians who can successfully analyse, diagnose and treat dermatological and STD problems. Emphasis is placed on punctuality, sincerity in working and also to develop aptitude for research work.
